With a photoprotective formula made from natural extracts, UIS obtains a new national patent

A photoprotective formulation that protects the skin against UV-B rays made from extracts of the ‘Lippia origanoides’ plant, is the new patent granted by the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce to the Industrial University of Santander, the result of the work of researchers from the CENIVAM Research Center of Excellence, under the leadership of professor and researcher Elena Stashenko.

It is a topical composition that according to its creators is capable of protecting the skin against damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation thanks to its photoprotective phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties from the extracts of the Lippia origanoides plant or also known as’ oregano from the bush ‘. Its presentations can be given in cream, lotion, gel, ointment, ointment or similar.

For the researchers of the CIBIMOL research group and the Microbiology and Genetics Research Group, attached to the CENIVAM Knowledge Bionet, this natural product created from plants comprises a wide spectrum of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids; which have the ability to reduce oxidative damage caused by short wavelength UV radiation and decrease the penetration of UV-B radiation. These compounds are also chemopreventive in skin cancer, prevent allergic diseases, among others.

Its authors are the professor of the School of Chemistry and director of CIBIMOL-CENIVAM, Elena Stashenko, professor Jairo René Martínez Morales of the School of Chemistry, professor Jorge Luis Fuentes Lorenzo of the School of Biology and director of the Research Group in Microbiology and Genetics; Diego Camilo Durán García, Technical Project Coordinator at CIBIMOL-CENIVAM, and the researchers Yuri Córdoba Campo and Gloria Lizeth Díaz Arenas.

“According to the World Health Organization, each year between two and three million cases of non-melanocyte skin cancer are generated worldwide, and approximately 66,000 people with malignant melanomas or other types of skin cancer. UV radiation generated by the sun is the cause of these types of skin cancer, and overexposure to these rays produces suppression of the immune system, photoaging and carcinogenesis of the skin. In recent years, the great interest in photoprotection has been aimed at reducing the risk of injuries, for which measures have been taken to filter the sun’s rays using sunscreens capable of absorbing radiant energy in the UV-A and UV range -B, ”the researchers commented.

This patent is part of the initiatives developed by the National Research Center for the Agroindustrialization of Tropical Aromatic and Medicinal Plant Species – CENIVAM of the UIS seeking to contribute to the sustainable use of Colombian biodiversity, with an important social and collaborative projection with the growers of plants in the department of Santander and Arauca.

It is noteworthy that in this effort to contribute to the sustainability of the country based on biodiversity, the UIS was the winner in the bioeconomy focus of the Colombia Científica program promoted by the National Government, with the BIO-RETO XXI 15:50 project that It contemplates the participation of the scientific community of the UIS, the productive sector and small producers of plants for the development of bioproducts for the health, agriculture and cosmetic sectors, as a result of the study of Colombian biodiversity.
