The Language Institute of the Universidad Industrial de Santander is a self-sustaining academic and administrative unit attached to the Faculty of Human Sciences. It was created by Acuerdo No 036 del 5 abril de 1990 of the Superior Council. The Language Institute has provided uninterrupted services to the region for over 31 years and today it is the largest language institute in eastern Colombia.

The course offers students the opportunity to learn English in an active and creative way through exposure to real communication situations, thereby privileging the learning experience through the stimulation of the senses. The course addresses the characteristics of the child’s age, language level, ways of learning, and types of motivation through the use of strategies to introduce new vocabulary, practice, and reinforce what they have learned.

Levels

This course has a total of 12 levels that will be developed according to
the hourly intensity for this age group, distributed in 9 classes for a total
of 40 hours

Ages: 7 to 8 years old.

 

Program

Pre-Teenagers

The lessons focus on communicative language teaching. It emphasizes language acquisition through meaningful learning situations that adjust knowledge to the development of skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. At the end of the course, students will be able to understand sentences and expressions related to areas of immediate relevance: they will be able to communicate in simple daily tasks that require a direct and simple exchange of information on familiar aspects; they will also be able to describe in simple terms aspects of their background, environment and aspects in areas of immediate need.

Levels

The Institute distributes the A1 and A2 levels according to the hourly intensity for this age group.

Ages: 9 to 11 years old.

Teenagers

This program presents an age-appropriate approach, including current topics. It provides students with a series of cognitive strategies that lead them to become independent learners. Each level includes the completion of meaningful classroom projects where students put into practice the vocabulary learned, through the preparation and presentation of situations that involve the use of communicative skills. Teaching processes focus on what the learner can actually do with the language in a specific situation.

This course has a total of 12 levels that will be developed according to the hourly intensity for this age group, distributed in 9 classes for a total of 40 hours.

Ages: 12 to 14 years old

Program

Conversational Program

This course offers a series of speaking activities such as forums, debates, and group techniques that allow the improvement of speaking skills through the participation of all students. Additionally, written production activities are included to allow the student to make correct use of grammatical structures and to reinforce the new vocabulary acquired in class. In all the lessons, students are guided to research and prepare the topics to be discussed in the session, put into practice their speaking and listening skills through participation in cooperative learning activities that allow them to expose, argue, discuss previous knowledge and deepen the topic through the creation of proposals as well as arguments based on their own opinions.

Ages: 15 to 17 years old.

This course has a total of 12 levels that will be developed according to the hourly intensity for this age group, distributed in 9 classes for a total of 40 hours.

Young Adults

These courses are structured according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which aims to respond to the linguistic and cultural needs of a community through the development of different communicative skills in a given foreign language.  Learners can use various competences according to a given level, in various contexts and under various circumstances, and thus engage in language activities to produce and/or receive texts in relation to domain-specific topics.

The UIS Language Institute offers courses in English, French, Portuguese and German as foreign languages. These courses are structured according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which focuses on responding to the linguistic and cultural needs of a community through the development of different communicative skills in a given foreign language.

Special

Programs

English courses for teachers

This course is part of the Program for the Development of Communicative Skills in English and the Strengthening of Methodological Skills for primary and secondary school teachers. It is aligned with the international standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Its approach is communicative for the development of the 4 skills, taking into account the linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic components.
It is offered in synchronous remote mode with the support material in digital format. Classes are computer-assisted synchronous with direct guidance from teachers for the development of communicative skills in the language and the strengthening of methodological skills. Incorporation of institutional virtual platforms. Tutorial support for clarification of doubts and preparation of a class project.

Courses for specific purposes: Call Centers

This course is framed within the Program for the Development of Communicative Skills and the Strengthening of Foreign Language Skills and Development of Strategies for Customer Service in the Call Center Context. It is aligned with the international standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
This program is aimed at people with a consolidated A1 proficiency level, in synchronous remote modality. Its approach is communicative for the development of communicative skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) taking into account the linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic components with priority on oral expression and comprehension skills. It includes two components: general foreign language and specific content through a level of English for specific purposes.

Language Preparation: Pruebas Saber 11
Course specially designed to help 10th and 11th grade students to prepare for the state tests in the English component. The methodology and material used in the course is aligned to the format of the state tests (Barrancabermeja Campus only).

English Immersion: (Course for Children and Teenagers during vacations)

These courses are held during vacations for children from 5 to 8 years old and from 9 to 12 years old. In our vacation courses children can have fun while learning English. In addition, they can play games and make new friends. Activities include: arts and crafts, recipes, karaoke, outdoor games, dances and much more.
Courses of 20 or 40 hours offered in the middle and at the end of the year.

In-person English and Coffee
This course is aimed at the general community interested in learning English with an intensity of 1 hour per day. Its focus is communicative with priority on productive skills (written and oral expression) mainly.

  • It is aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • Preparation for standard exams. In-person. TOEFL
  • Preparation for standard exams. In-person. ELTS.

40-hour courses that allow the development of specific strategies to achieve success in the international test. It requires a consolidated A2+ proficiency level.

Be program (Blended English Program)

This is a course with a high virtual component that is developed in 4 stages leading to level A2. Each cycle lasts 12 weeks.
