Vertebrate Reproductive Biology
Laboratory
The laboratory conducts research projects and trains students in the area of reproductive and developmental biology and related ecological aspects in vertebrates. It is associated with the vertebrate collections of the Natural History Museum in partnership with the other laboratories managed by members of the research group.
Services offered to the university: training of undergraduate and graduate students. Knowledge production.
Services offered to the general public: inventories and monitoring of fauna in collaboration with the MHN collections.
Biodiversity Study Group (GEBIO)
More than 70 undergraduate and graduate students have conducted their thesis research in this laboratory in nearly 30 years of work. Most of the work has been published in scientific journals.

Ecology
Laboratory
This laboratory was created in 2010 and is associated with the Herpetological Collection of the Museum of Natural History and the Collection of Mastozoology of the UIS. Its field of study is framed within the Biological Sciences and its lines of research are ecology, zoology, ornithology and herpetology.
Our research projects are focused on fundamental aspects of population and community ecology and on general aspects of conservation. In that sense, we investigate how the interaction of spatial processes at local and regional levels determines which species are found within communities.

The Ecology Laboratory provides diversity characterization and Fauna Monitoring services.
Workshops focused on Bioacoustics in groups such as bats are offered to interested students.

Entomology
Laboratory
Both the Laboratory and the Entomological Collection of the Museum of Natural History were created in 1975 by Professor William Olarte Espinosa. The laboratory began its research with material obtained from samples obtained in guava, citrus, tobacco and palm cultivation areas. Later on, material collected during field trips, graduate work and contributions from the Biodiversity Studies Group was added.
Currently, the laboratory works mainly from collections made during research work in some regions of the department of Santander, especially in conservation areas, paramo zones, dry forests and the Bucaramanga metropolitan area.

Systematics and Biogeography
Laboratory
The Laboratory’s main objective is the training of highly qualified professionals and both empirical and theoretical research in the broadest aspect of Biological Systematics (phylogeny and historical biogeography). The laboratory was created in 2002 as a space for research and professional training activities. Its research projects are focused on the neotropics and on some groups of interest in the biogeographic region.

Plant Ecophysiology & Terrestrial Ecosystems
Laboratory
The Laboratory of Plant Ecophysiology & Terrestrial Ecosystems has the minimum infrastructure necessary to develop teaching and research activities in topics related to the evaluation of water relations (soil-plant-atmosphere), nutrition and mineral metabolisms of plants, foliar gas exchange in plants by means of infrared gas analysis equipment IRGA LICOR 6800 and chlorophyll fluorescence (MiniPam II, WALZ RFA), foliar spectrometer, mass spectrometry (12C/13C and 14N/15N) and spectrophotometry.

The Laboratory of Plant Ecophysiology & Terrestrial Ecosystems develops teaching and research activities for the undergraduate and master’s degree in Biology. It also carries out research projects supported by national and international funding.
Services offered to the general public
The Laboratory of Plant Ecophysiology & Terrestrial Ecosystems offers training and refresher courses on topics related to plant ecophysiology, management and dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems. It also performs biochemical evaluations of plant tissues and soils.

Conservation Biology Laboratory
Laboratory
The Conservation Biology Laboratory has the infrastructure for the development of teaching and research activities using databases for the analysis of information about the dynamics and effects of anthropogenic activity on biological diversity and terrestrial ecosystem functioning. Drones and remote sensing equipment are also used to monitor the dynamics of the primary productivity of ecosystems, their spatiotemporal variations and the effects of environmental variation on terrestrial ecosystems.

Genetics and Biotechnology laboratory
Laboratory
Since 2012, the Laboratory of Genetics and Biotechnology has served as a support for undergraduate work in the field of population genetics. As of 2017, it incorporated studies on plant genetics, in vitro cultures, animal Cytogenetics, among others – all of them supported by the in-depth subjects taught by associate professors.
We are working to offer services in the near future.

Environmental Microbiology and Mutagenesis (LMMA)
Laboratory
Mutagenesis, photoprotection and microbiology are LMMA’s main lines of research. Its work includes genotoxicological evaluation, chemoprevention, the study of natural photo protectors, the study of genetic diversity of microbial communities, bio-prospecting, taxonomic identification, preservation of microbial collections and microbial genomics.

Hydrobiology
Laboratory
The Hydrobiology laboratory is a teaching, research and outreach unit belonging to the School of Biology, which has the fundamental purpose of developing studies in the areas of ecology and biodiversity of the communities found in aquatic systems of epicontinental waters (lentic and lotic). The laboratory has a wide experience in projects such as Santander BIO and Expeditions to Antarctica, where it participated in the identification and publication of the species found in these environments and their relationship with the environmental conditions.
