ABOUT THE

Program

The PhD in Physics from the Universidad Industrial de Santander aims to provide physicists and professionals in related careers a solid training that enables them to develop and direct research activities, teaching and applications of physics in national and foreign universities and research centers. 

The program trains professionals with a high academic level, according to international standards, which is evident, among other indicators, in the number of graduates who lead doctoral research projects and perform postdoctoral studies. 

The doctorate is based on the solution of current scientific problems related to the areas covered by the research groups that are part of the program.

Profile

The applicant to study the PhD in Physics from the Industrial University of Santander must prove his or her degree as a physicist, physical engineer or in related disciplines, both in science and engineering. Likewise, he or she is a professional who possesses the required skills and a strong motivation for the study of problems whose solution is found in methods or instruments in the area of physics.

The Doctor of Physics graduated from the Industrial University of Santander is an independent researcher with a solid scientific background, a broad vision of modern science, with the required capacity to communicate his knowledge and to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams. He/she is also a professional who identifies himself/herself with the contemporary circumstances and needs of the country.

During the postgraduate course, the student will acquire a rigorous academic and cultural formation, which will allow him/her to communicate with the international scientific community and reach the maturity that will allow him/her to propose and develop successful research projects.

Requirements list

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • UIS registration form duly completed and signed.

  • Resume, it has to be done in the UIS format established institutionally for this purpose, with the attachment of the certificates and copies of documents that corroborate what is described in it.

  • Photocopy of valid identity document valid in Colombia or valid passport for foreigners.

  • Photocopy of the diploma or Photocopy of the undergraduate degree certificate required by the program, issued by a recognized HEI in Colombia.

    • Notice 1: If the applicant has a degree from a foreign university, it must be duly apostilled and translated into Spanish if it is in a foreign language. The degrees must be validated before the Ministerio de Educación Nacional of the Republic of Colombia in case the applicant is going to study a master’s degree in the area of health, law or other area regulated by national regulations that require this administrative act.

  • Certificate of the grades obtained during undergraduate studies, with a weighted average equal to or higher than three point fifty (3.50), and those of the research or in-depth master’s degree programs completed.

    • Notice 2: In the case of UIS undergraduate alumni, it is not necessary to provide it.

  • Receipt of payment issued by the UIS treasury for the current value of the registration or receipt of consignment in the account authorized by the UIS.

  • For research master’s degrees, certification of foreign language level equivalent to or higher than level A1 according to the CEFR for languages, according to standardized test or issued by the UIS Institute of Languages.

    • Notice 2: This certification will not be required for those applicants who are native speakers of a foreign language or who have obtained a university degree in a foreign language, according to the description of such studies in the corresponding documents.

  • Three (3) academic reference letters, which each professor must send to docfis@uis.edu.co.

  • Research Master’s Degrees: endorsement letter from a research group or center of the UIS or from a scientific institution with which there is an agreement in force, signed by the director of the same, and in which the applicant is presented to the program.

  • In-depth master’s degrees: endorsement letter from a research group or center of the UIS or from a company or organization, signed by the legal representative of the same, presenting the applicant to the postgraduate program and expressing that in such group or entity the application work may be proposed or carried out.
