Petrography

Laboratory

768-512.png

Laboratory equipped with petrographic microscopes with transmitted light that allows the adequate analysis of minerals and inheritent characteristics of thin sections, whether sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic rocks.

The teacher of this laboratory has the possibility of using a trinocular petrographic microscope, which is connected to a camera that allows taking images and additionally allows to connect to an external monitor.

The laboratory has collections of thin sections for the study of different phenomena and particularities of each group of rocks.

The laboratory offers its services to undergraduate and graduate students, professors and staff assigned to research groups, student chapters and seedbeds, for the observation, description and petrographic and mineralogical classification of thin sections.  The laboratory is mainly concerned with the development of the practical component of the subjects Mineralogy II, Sedimentology for Geologists, Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology and research projects involving the study and analysis of thin sections.

Stereomicroscopy

Laboratory

768-512.png

Trained to house 15 students, this laboratory is fully endowed and suitable for the study of sedimentary rocks, minerals and fossil specimens. It features high magnification stereoscopic microscopes with high intensity trainer for better lighting, one for each student. In addition, it has a trinocular stereoscope, which allows to transmit to an external screen what is being observed bullet the target. In it lie the collections of sedimentary rocks and fossils.

The Stereomicroscopy laboratory provides its services to undergraduate and graduate students, professors and staff assigned to research groups, student chapters and seedbeds, for the observation, description and classification of macroscopic samples of rocks, minerals and fossils.

This laboratory is mainly concerned with the development of the practical component of the subjects Sedimentology for Geologists, Paleontology I, Hydrocarbon Geology, Geophysiography (Service to the School of Biology) and research projects that involve the study and analysis at the macroscopic level of the different groups of rocks and fossils.

Advanced Petrography

Laboratory

768-512.png

Laboratory equipped with petrographic microscopes with transmitted light that allows the adequate analysis of minerals and inheritent characteristics of thin sections, whether sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic rocks.

This laboratory works as an extension of the petrography laboratory, that is, students, especially those in the last semester who are developing their research project to opt for a Geologist degree, use this space to describe and characterize the different attributes of the rocks from the thin sections that are analyzed.  Teachers and master’s students can also make use of this space.
