and Social Transformation

In the Faculty of Physicochemical Engineering we work collaboratively with our professors and our students, in the consolidation of a culture that integrates equality, diversity and inclusion in all the academic, research and extension activities that we develop.

Social inclusion is one of our purposes, so that we can help all young people become the engineers and scientists of the future, enhance the individual skills of our students and support all our teachers and professionals to advance and be an inspiring example for others.

ABOUT THE

Faculty

The Faculty of Physicochemical Engineering brings together four (4) highly qualified schools, with a recognized trajectory of education and research in engineering and science. Our strategy is collaborative work, therefore professors, students, professionals and technicians actively participate in the development of undergraduate and graduate programs and research and extension activities.

We develop multidisciplinary research, around the identification, exploitation and transformation of natural resources. We have research groups and seedbeds which boost the acquisition of research skills. The professors maintain a dynamic of research work that allows them to develop projects and generate new knowledge.

Currently, four (4) undergraduate programs and four (4) graduate programs have the high quality accreditation granted by the National Accreditation Council – CNA of the National Ministry of Education, they are:

  • Geology
  • Petroleum Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Master in Materials Engineering
  • Master’s Degree in Hydrocarbon Engineering
  • Master in Chemical Engineering
  • Doctorate in Chemical Engineering

The Chemical Engineering program also holds the arcu-SUR international accreditation, granted by Mercosur.

Given our commitment to continuous improvement currently undergraduate programs are working towards achieving international ABET accreditation.

FACULTY

History

Our Faculty is very proud of its history, of all the professionals we have trained and the important contributions made to regional and national development. The Faculty as it is structured today was formed in 1995. However, the programs have a long history.

The Chemical Engineering program is one of the three (3) programs with which the Industrial University de Santander began its work in 1948. Then, in 1954, the programs of Metallurgical Engineering, the first of its kind in Colombia, and Petroleum Engineering were created.

The master’s program in chemical engineering began in 1968. It was the first engineering master’s program in the country. The first teachers were Europeans and North Americans who came with UNESCO funding. It was the beginning of graduate research programs at the university. In this line, the Master’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering was created in 1978.

In 1982, the Geology program was created thanks to the development of studies carried out by the National Committee of Earth Sciences, which demonstrated the need for a greater number of geologists in the country.

The research path of the Faculty was consolidated with the creation of the Doctoral Program in Chemical Engineering in 1992, which was also the first in Colombia in the field of engineering.

The Master’s Degree in Hydrocarbon Engineering was created in 2002 in response to the need to strengthen and consolidate research activities in the field of Petroleum Engineering.

In 2007, the Master’s program in Metallurgical Engineering was transformed into the Master’s program in Materials Engineering, with the aim of giving greater openness to materials research. The Master in Geology was created in 2008.

The second doctoral program of the faculty, created in 2012, is the Doctorate in Materials Engineering.

MISSION AND

Vision

Mission

We are an academic unit dedicated to the training of people with a solid scientific, humanistic and technical foundation in Physicochemical Engineering, through the management of higher education programs and research projects.

We base our work on an excellent teaching, administrative and technical team, on the high quality of our programs and on the moral, ethical and cultural values and principles of our society as a knowledge-generating organization.

We direct our management to the achievement of excellence and service to the community in order to contribute to the industrial, economic and social development of Colombia.

Vision

The academic programs of the Faculty of Physicochemical Engineering will be recognized at the national level for excellence in the development of missionary functions of teaching, research and extension.

It will have a teaching staff with doctoral training, experience and presence in the international scientific community. Research will be the articulating axis of the development of the Faculty of Physicochemical Engineering, both in master’s and doctoral programs and in undergraduate programs. The academic offer of the Faculty of Physicochemical Engineering will be of high quality and accredited at all levels of education. The expansion will be the means to strengthen the relationship with companies, institutions and the academic community. It will have an efficient and comprehensive administration that will allow to accelerate the administrative processes, teaching, research and extension. It will also have a functional, adaptable, safe, spacious and sufficient infrastructure.
