The Research Group on Basic and Applied Geology (GIGBA) emerged in the late 1990s in response to the need to generate new knowledge in the field of Geosciences. Our group has evolved through different stages, during which we have established research lines in (1) Georesources, (2) Geology of Crystalline Complexes and Sedimentary Basins, (3) Quaternary Geology, (4) Environmental Geology and Geological Hazards, and (5) Experimental Geology. Our research initiatives are developed from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on solving challenges related to geological mapping of surface lithologies and the structural arrangement of rock bodies, geo-themed mapping, exploration and sustainable use of geo-resources, geological hazards, and experimental geology.

The research line in Environmental Geology and Geological Hazards is perhaps the most impactful in society, focusing on the investigation of natural and anthropogenic geological risks, promoting nature conservation through restoration processes, as well as risk management. Another research line with significant impact is Experimental Geology, where an interdisciplinary approach is used to study, both experimentally and in application, the use of low-cost raw materials for their technological transformation into materials for industrial use (such as zeolites and geopolymers). Additionally, this line explores the use of industrial waste in the preparation of eco-construction materials, rock-fluid interaction with implications for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery, and the comprehensive evaluation of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources using state-of-the-art technologies. This work provides solutions to the challenges faced by society and the productive sector of our country.
