The Research Group on Basic and Applied Geology (GIGBA) emerged in the late 1990s as a result of concerns about generating new knowledge in the field of Geosciences. Our group has gone through different stages through which the lines of research have been constituted in (1) Georesources, (2) Geology of Crystalline Complexes and Sedimentary Basins, (3) Quaternary Geology, (4) Environmental Geology and Geological Threats, and (5) Experimental Geology. Research initiatives developed from an interdisciplinary perspective. Our research has focused on solving problems of geological mapping problems on the surface of the different lithologies and the structural arrangement of rocky bodies, geo-themed mapping, exploration and exploitation of geo resources and their sustainable use, geo threats, and experimental geology.

The line of research in Environmental Geology and Geological Threats is perhaps the most important and impact in society, however it investigates natural and anthropogenic geological risks, promoting the conservation of nature from restoration processes, as well as risk management. However, another of the research lines with strong impact is the Experimental Geology in which in an interdisciplinary way is studied both on an experimental and application scale the use of low-cost raw materials for their technological transformation into materials for industrial use (zeolites and geopolymers), the use of industrial waste in the preparation of eco-construction materials, rock-fluid interaction with implications in improved hydrocarbon recovery, and comprehensive evaluation of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources from modern state-of-the-art technologies. This work provides solutions to the problems experienced by society and the productive sector of our country.
