The first research center of Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), recognized by the Higher Council in 1992 as one of the pillars of the first doctoral and master’s programs in Chemical Engineering in Colombia. Since 2002, Professor Ph.D. Viatcheslav Kafarov has served as the director of CIDES. Currently, the group holds A1 recognition by COLCIENCIAS for its work on projects in the areas of energy and the environment, biofuels, material integrity, enhanced recovery, and process modeling and simulation. These projects are supported by and operate through the research hotbeds for Sustainable Development in Industry and Energy.

- Sustainability assessment for renewable energy applications, sustainable energy systems for rural electrification, computer-assisted selection of optimal renewable solutions.
- Liquid biofuels and sustainability co-products: biodiesel, biohydrogen, second generation bioethanol, biorefinery.
- Use of solid biomass for energy production
- Microalgae for biofuels and high value-added products
- Process systems engineering, life cycle assessment, exergy analysis, and process integration.
- Eco-efficiency of the industrial process.
