Diego Alberto Buitrago Mesa, third-year resident of the Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialization, obtained first place in the XIII Ibero-Latin American Congress of Burns and VI Paraguayan Congress of Burns, held in Asunción Paraguay.
The objective of the Congress was to present more representative experiences and advances in terms of acute management and rehabilitation of burn patients in Latin America.
Diego’s participation was given with the presentation of two free works and a poster. Free work “Incidence and factors associated with loss of skin grafts in burned patients”, winner of the first place in the thematic area “Advanced cure in burns”; free work, “Incidence of electrical burns in a burn unit of a 4th level hospital”, and the poster, “Case report of home helium burn.
The objectives of the winning work, “Incidence and factors associated with loss of skin grafts in burned patients”, were to describe the incidence of loss of skin grafts in burned patients, describe the causes of loss of skin grafts and expose demographic characteristics of burn patients receiving skin grafts.
This work gives an incidence at the local level of the percentage of skin grafts that suffer loss in burned patients, the main causes, which can help to have a more effective management of the burned patient that requires skin grafts.
This research was carried out under the tutorship of Professor Carlos Enrique Ramírez, coordinator of the postgraduate program in Plastic Surgery, and Doctor Héctor Julio Meléndez, Epidemiological advisor. Likewise, it counted with the collaboration of Doctors Donovan Camilo Sánchez Álvarez, Alejandra Logreira Castillo, Maria Angélica Chacón Manosalva and Karoll Dayanna Aparicio Rueda.
