A new language

For a New World

The Language Institute of the Universidad Industrial de Santander is a self-sustaining academic and administrative unit attached to the Faculty of Human Sciences. It was created by Acuerdo No 036 del 5 abril de 1990 of the Superior Council. The Language Institute has provided uninterrupted services to the region for over 31 years and today it is the largest language institute in eastern Colombia.

Programs

The Foreign Language Curricular Program is a set of subjects created with the purpose of developing communicative skills in a language other than the mother tongue, which in turn allow the student to fulfill the graduation requirement for the degree. These courses are aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in in-person programs.

Current Guidelines

According to Resolutions of the Consejo Académico No. 036 y 187 de 2005, 140 de 2006, the courses offered by the Institute to all students of the different faculties of the in-person programs, with the exception of the bachelor’s degree programs, are listed.

The proficiency in one or more foreign languages is now an indispensable requirement to function in an increasingly globalized world. For this reason, the Universidad Industrial de Santander defined for its undergraduate students to take 160 hours of a foreign language as a degree requirement, corresponding to level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

New Curricular Guidelines for the Development of Multilingual and Intercultural Competencies in the Academic Programs (according to the requirements of each program).

According toAcuerdo 023 de 2022, the institutional references for the creation, reform and modification of academic programs at Universidad Industrial de Santander are approved.

The curricular guidelines for the development of multilingual and intercultural competencies in the academic programs contribute to the consolidation of the internationalization processes of the curriculum based on the respect and appreciation of one’s own culture in order to train integral professionals who understand the global dynamics and are capable of recognizing and offering solutions to the needs that arise in this dynamic.

The development of multilingual and intercultural competence at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) is open to multiple languages and cultures and this diversity is valued. However, English is established as the first foreign language of study, in consideration of its undeniable role as the language of convergence for scientific communication on the planet.

These guidelines base the development of multilingual and intercultural competencies on the principles of relevance, transversality, flexibility, internationalization, differential approach, transformative pedagogy, global culture, and respect for local cultures, and comprehensive training that arise from the guidelines established in the Institutional Project, the Development Plan, the Pedagogical Model, the Guidelines for the Internationalization of the UIS, the Cultures Policy, and the Inclusive Education Policy.

The university establishes the initial level of competence according to the level of training of the program to which the student is linked and defines a scope of level B1+ in English according to the CEFR in professional programs. In the design and redesign of programs by propaedeutic cycles, the academic-administrative units may propose a variation in the moment of the formative process in which students must demonstrate the level of foreign language proficiency, if this variation contributes to improve the organization and coherence of the curriculum and the formative process of the student.

To achieve this, there is a training path that begins with the administration of a placement test that all students admitted to an undergraduate program at the UIS must take in order to determine their initial level of competence.

Programa Vigente

The mandatory Curricular Program for students of the different undergraduate programs of the UIS includes subjects I and II of the following languages: English, French, Portuguese and Italian. In the case of English, the University offers English I (23424) and English II (23425), as an option to fulfill the degree requirement.

New Program

The university establishes the initial proficiency level according to the level of training of the program to which the student is linked; however, they must submit a qualifying test of English foreign language proficiency prior to the beginning of the first academic semester, which will serve to organize the appropriate training path.

Students who reach level A1 or higher in the qualifying exam or who certify a level higher than A1 will have access to the institutional training pathway for the development of multilingual and intercultural competencies defined by the University for its program.

Those who do not reach the expected proficiency level, A1, in this exam have the first three semesters to take a self-managed, credit-free leveling course offered by the Instituto de Lenguas. The student must register for this course according to the schedule established and published by the Language Institute.

If the student does not take the qualifying exam within the time established by the university, the student will not be able to access the leveling course, and will have to reach and certify this linguistic proficiency, independently, in order to be able to take the following levels offered by the university. Students who do not enroll or advance in the leveling course will also have to reach and certify independently the A1 level. This certification must be presented for homologation before the end of the third semester of the program.

Students who do not enroll in the leveling course or fail to pass it will have to reach the A1 level of proficiency independently and obtain homologation from the Language Institute, the School of Languages or the School of Education, as appropriate. 25772 – Level: A1 – Italiano LE II – (opcional)

According to Acuerdo 219 de 2007, the Universidad Industrial de Santander offers undergraduate students a benefit through which 3 levels of the extension course (B1.3, B1.4 and B1.5) are subsidized to complete the B1 stage as long as they meet the following requirements:

1. Having passed English V (equivalent to B1.1 and B1.2 levels) with a grade equal to or higher than 4.0.
2. Belonging to socioeconomic strata 1, 2 or 3.
3. Being enrolled in a university program at the time of applying for the benefit.

4. These levels must be taken consecutively, that is to say, once the English V course is completed, the student must apply for the UIS quota in the immediately following extension academic cycle and its concession will depend on the available quotas in the schedules and location requested. 5. This benefit does not include the registration fee.
6. Send an E.mail to iladult@uis.edu.co to request the corresponding form, fill it out and send it 3 days before the start date of the academic year to which it applies.
7. Make the registration payment to complete the process.


Courses can be taken at the Main Campus or at the Cabecera Campus, on an intensive or semi-intensive schedule.

For completion requirement A1. However, they reach A2+ level in English and A2 in Portuguese and French.

Placement Verification Test

These subjects can be validated through: extension courses, institutional exam, international exam (TOEFL).
For the undergraduate validation/verification process it is necessary to take into account the following information: Acuerdo N.021 de 2007 (February 6th) by which the subjects of English I and English II are validated by the results of the English proficiency exam, practiced by the UIS Language Institute, and other provisions are issued. To make the validation/verification process, UIS undergraduate students interested in fulfilling the degree requirement in terms of foreign language can:
  • Take and pass the intensive or semi-intensive courses of the extension program.
  • Take and pass the Conversational or Young Adults program courses.
  • Take and pass an undergraduate proficiency exam.
  • Present verifiable certification of international exam. (TOEFL)

For any of these procedures it must be taken into account that the validity period is two years.

Attention: Comply with the following requirements to take the placement verification exam:

  • Not having missed the course you wish to validate.
  • Having the required course (i.e., having taken and passed the previous course. For example, to homologate English 2 you must have passed English I).
  • Not having the Institutional Competency Examination in force. (This exam is valid for two years).
  • The student may not take the proficiency exam for homologation purposes to raise the grade average if the subject has already been taken or validated/verified. e) The student may take the proficiency exam for validation/verification purposes of undergraduate subjects even if the student has the subject enrolled in it.

Program

According to the General Postgraduate Regulations, Acuerdo 075 de 2013, the students of the Research Master’s and Medical-Surgical Specialties as well as the students of the Doctorate programs may pass their foreign language level graduation requirement by taking and passing the subjects offered here.
