Sludge
Laboratory
Experimental tests are developed in the sludge laboratory to monitor the physical and chemical condition of drilling fluids, detect changes in their properties and possible behavioral anomalies caused by pollutants present in perforated formations, assess appropriate treatment, and take the necessary actions to ensure compliance with the required functions. Technical tests include: sludge density, total solids, sand content, rheological behavior, plastic viscosity, apparent viscosity, yield point, gel point, viscosifying performance, filter volume, revoque characteristics, pH, alkalinity, Hardness, Salinity, Methylene Blue Test.
The Sludge Laboratory of the EIP fulfills the function of supporting the material that bears the name of Drilling Sludge, as well as supporting the experimental phase of undergraduate and postgraduate students who are developing degree projects in the drilling area and that require the realization of tests to a drilling sludge formulated and elaborated there for this purpose.
In the EIP Sludge Laboratory, no software is used, since all the equipment is field equipment that only requires the intervention of the operator.
Tests | Equipment |
Sludge density or weight, sand content and Marsh viscosity | Field Kit (Sludge Scale, Sand Measurement Kit and Marsh Funnel) |
Solids content | 10 ml Retort Equipment |
Sludge flow properties and viscosifier performance | Rotary viscometer type Fann 35 A |
Study and control of filtration | Filter API press and HPHT filterpress |
Análisis químico y Prueba de Azul de Metileno (MBT) | Chemical analysis kit (Alkalinity, Chlorides and Water Hardness) and heating plate (Hotplate) |
Chemical Analysis and Methylene Blue (MBT) Test | Electrical stability meter for emulsions model 23E |
Support for all tests | Mixer Model HMD400, electronic balance (accuracy of 0.1 g) and exhaust and exhaust cabin of gases and fumes |

Fluid
Laboratory
This laboratory experimentally and analytically studies the main properties of fluids produced in the hydrocarbons industry and their liquid derivatives, as well as their behavior under specific operating conditions in compliance with ASTM standards, APIs and selected field protocols. The laboratory has specialized equipment, materials and instrumentation necessary to determine physical properties associated with fluid quality and treatment needs, such as density, API gravity, water and sediment content (BSW), salinity, selection of chemical demulsicants, viscosities, among others. Parameters necessary to assess safe conditions during transport, storage and marketing, such as the point of fluidity, spark and fire points and vapour pressure of liquid mixtures, among others, can also be determined.
