CINBIN was founded in March 1986 as the Industrial Microbiology Research Laboratory (LIMI). Later, due to its accelerated growth and lack of physical space, it was moved to the UIS headquarters in Guatiguará, where it served as a stage for teaching and research. In the first months of 2002, Dr. Graciela Chalela Alvarez retired, who was not only its founder and director but also a professor of Microbiology at the School of Biology.

In April 2002, the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of the School of Biology (LBM), created on March 27th, 1995 and directed by Dr. Jorge Hernández Torres, was merged with the CINBIN. This alliance gave rise to the Center for Innovation in Industrial Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, under the direction of Dr. Jorge Hernández Torres. Dr. Graciela Chalela lvarez’s research, outreach, and teaching functions were taken over by Professor Mariela Carreo de Arango, M.Sc., until the beginning of 2006.
In March 2006, Dr. Jorge Luis Fuentes Lorenzo joined the Center as a new professor of Microbiology and remained at the Center until November 2007, when the Microbiology Laboratory of the CINBIN was moved to the UIS Main Campus. Since then, the CINBIN reoriented its research lines, mainly towards work in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics.
However, with the involvement of new researchers, the Center has been recovering its operational capacity in all aspects of its mission, with the facilities of CINBIN as its headquarters. In April 2002, the Research Group in Industrial Biotechnology and Molecular Biology was registered in Colciencias. The group has been formed by professors, biologists, and students from the UIS, with the purpose of turning the CINBIN into a reference Center in the northeast of Colombia and, in the future, at a national level.
