Minciencias Classification : A1

GIRG conducts research in the areas of Cosmology, General Relativity, Relativistic Astrophysics, Astroparticles, Information Sciences and has recently ventured into Geosciences – Seismology. It actively collaborates with other national and international research groups, participates in numerous projects, promotes the training of undergraduate and graduate professionals and frequently has visiting researchers, providing students with a great opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas.  The group also promotes scientific culture in society through the outreach activities of the Halley Astronomy Group.

EXTENSION

Services

The Relativity and Gravitation Research Group (GIRG) -being consistent with its commitment to the promotion of science through the Halley Group of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Aerospace Sciences of the UIS- offers the following outreach services to the community. Activities are promoted on Facebook, X and Instagram as @HalleyUIS.

Children’s Astronomy Course: Course that seeks through playful activities to teach children, from six to twelve years old, the first concepts of astronomy and models of the Cosmos.

Diploma in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences: The Diploma is aimed at the general community, requires no previous knowledge and consists of a series of courses that provide a unique opportunity for enrollees to learn about astronomy and thus generate a first approach to a professional career in Astrophysics.

Planetarium: An academic space for astronomical projections, aimed at all ages, where participants can get closer to science. It is a space widely used by primary, elementary and middle school institutions to complement their training processes.

Visits to Educational Institutions: The group visits primary, elementary and middle school institutions with telescopes in order to motivate students to pursue the study of science. Observation days and visits are carried out. Nowadays, talks are given through video calls.

Dissemination: In order to raise the astronomical culture in Santander, educational activities such as conferences, videos, infographics, fanzine and challenges are implemented. Among these activities are:

  • Bucaramanga Scientific Café: A discussion space developed together with Casa del Libro Total where researchers and the general public meet monthly to talk about science topics.

  • Astro Al Aire: Radio micro-broadcasts (6-8 min) about Physics and Astrophysics.

  • Astronomy Nights: A fortnightly videoconference space in which internationally renowned researchers participate through the HalleyUIS YouTube channel.

  • Science at home: A space where children and young people interact with scientists through questions and answers in an online transmission on Youtube.

  • Technology and Modernity: This space consists of talks about technology and modernity topics that allow us to understand the science of the things that surround us.

  • Scientific Experiences: Physical experiments that can be replicated at home, which are taught through short videos that show the activities and the explanation of the phenomenon.

  • Science challenge: Every two weeks there is a challenge to do at home, which consists of demonstrating astronomical phenomena, building models and any fun experimental practice.

  • Observation trips: Visits to places far from the city where observations of astronomical phenomena may be made both with telescopes and with the naked eye.

  • Neighbors and friends: Sunday spaces where didactic activities are carried out for the general public, astronomical experiences are shared and solar observations are made.

  • Measurable Universe Hotbeds: Astronomical groups with students from schools of the community’s educational institutions, a space where students participate in educational activities with an investigative approach.
