The first research center of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), recognized by the Higher Council in 1992 for being one of the pillars of the first doctoral and master’s programs in Chemical Engineering in Colombia. Since 2002, Professor Ph.D. Viatcheslav Kafarov has been director of CIDES. Currently, the group is recognized in category A1 by COLCIENCIAS for developing projects in the areas of energy and the environment, biofuels, material integrity, improved recovery, modeling and simulation of processes, through the support and operation of the research hotbeds for Sustainable Development in Industry and Energy.

- Sustainability assessment for renewable energy applications, sustainable energy systems for rural electrification, computer-assisted selection of optimal renewable solutions.
- Liquid biofuels and sustainability co-products: biodiesel, biohydrogen, second generation bioethanol, biorefinery.
- Use of solid biomass for energy production
- Microalgae for biofuels and high value-added products
- Process systems engineering, lifecycle assessment, exergy analysis, and process integration.
- Eco-efficiency of the industrial process.
- Simulation and optimization for refineries and petrochemical processes.
