The Well Stability Research Group (GIEP) was established in September 2003 with the signing of Technological Cooperation Agreement No. 002 of 2003 between ECOPETROL-ICP, the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), and the Universidad Nacional – Sede Medellín, as part of the macro project aimed at reducing development costs in the Colombian Piedemonte Llanero.
The instability problems encountered during well drilling, which resulted in time loss and increased drilling costs in the Colombian Piedemonte, were attributed to multiple factors such as stress regimes, mechanical properties, weakness planes, well paths, angles of attack, mud density and composition, among other critical aspects. These challenges prompted companies in the hydrocarbons sector and universities in Colombia to initiate research in geomechanics applied to well stability.

The GIEP is composed of a multidisciplinary team, primarily consisting of UIS professors, Ecopetrol ICP professionals, and undergraduate and graduate students from UIS across various disciplines. This team is dedicated to integrating their knowledge to propose solutions to specific challenges related to geomechanical applications in the oil industry.
Over more than 15 years, the GIEP has achieved national and international recognition for its contributions, evidenced by its publications, methodologies, awards, and technical-scientific products that have significantly addressed real geomechanical problems, particularly in the Piedemonte Llanero region and through the analysis of global experiences in shale play development for future applications in Colombia.
Currently, the GIEP holds a Category B ranking in COLCIENCIAS, a status obtained in the National Call for the Measurement of Research Groups in Science, Technology, and Innovation in 2017. The group is also endorsed by the Colombian Petroleum Institute (ICP) and UIS.
