Our

History

The formation of Sacred and Profane inaugurates a new stage in the work carried out since 1993 by a group of researchers associated with the extinct Colombian Institute for the Study of Religions – ICER-, an entity born then to promote research on the religious fact, that is, religion as a social fact, from an inter and multidisciplinary perspective, while promoting interreligious dialogue, and between religious groups, the State, academia and society.

In more than 20 years of work, the doors have been opened for the study of religion in several public and private universities, new researchers have been trained, and research has been carried out and financed by public and private national and foreign entities. Also, several books, book chapters and articles have been published in national and foreign journals, in several languages.

Finally, it has organized three congresses of researchers of the religious fact in Colombia, and participated in various academic events in Colombia, Latin America, the United States and Europe.
Sagrado y Profano was born as a research group of ICER in 2008, and in 2010 created its nucleus at the Universidad Industrial de Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia, where its main research group operates.

In 2011 it was recognized and classified as a research group by the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation -COLCIENCIAS- of Colombia (now Minciencias).

  • To establish a permanent and necessary dialogue with different academic instances (university and research centers, libraries, archives) and with different religious and state organizations and institutions in order to make available the capacities and availabilities of the group.

  • To integrate a support network with national and foreign researchers and academic centers to exchange information, work methods, establish joint research and promote the specialization of Colombian researchers.

  • To promote interfaith dialogue to stimulate the processes of peaceful coexistence through mutual knowledge and the realization of works of information to the community in an ecumenical perspective, which is inclusive of all denominations.

  • To promote agreements with Colombian and/or international institutions to carry out forums, lectures, conferences, seminars and other joint events aimed at the dissemination of knowledge, studies and research on religious issues.

Our

Vision

  • It will be consolidated in the medium term as one of the main research groups of the religious fact in the country.

  • It will establish, in the long term, a center for research on religion.

  • It will maintain and strengthen relationships with similar academic networks in the United States and Europe, carrying out joint research, academic and non-academic events of reflection on issues related to religion.
