La Casa de la

Lectura

La Casa de La Lectura is a virtual space on the library’s website that encompasses four digital platforms: Multiskills, Odilo University, The Shelf, and Léctimus. Its primary objective is to offer university students at any level access to a variety of critical reading activities.

This initiative has been developed in response to the imperative to enhance students’ performance in the generic critical reading module and recognize the significance of this competency in both academic and professional domains. Furthermore, it acknowledges the importance of identifying and leveraging new forms of learning in our society to attain a higher quality of education for students. As Wasserman (2023) emphasizes, “there are new challenges. I will only mention a few (perhaps I can expand later). The dominant factor today in information and knowledge is obsolescence. Careers must change. The way programs are constructed must also change.” Therefore, these platforms aim to tackle emerging challenges, such as generic critical reading competency and knowledge of evolving learning technologies.

MULTISKILLS

Platform

.

Platform responsible for conducting diagnostic tests of critical reading, which take approximately one hour and 30 minutes, and are adjusted according to the guidelines established by ICFES. Consequently, it consists of 35 questions, of which 9 are about local reading, 14 about global reading, and 12 about critical reading.

ODILO UNIVERSITY

Platform

.

Platform that allows the University Community to find a wide variety of books, podcasts, audiobooks, or learning experiences. These learning experiences are an added value where teachers can create different activities, such as the “learning path” or the “book club”.

Access Odilo University through this link, by entering the credentials of the Virtual Library UIS, which allows you to enjoy any of its contents (books, podcasts, audiobooks, and public learning experiences). However, critical reading lessons designed from the Library will be in a private “learning path”, with the aim that students who want to access them make the respective registration that allows better control of activity compliance and adjust the lesson to the needs of that group.

LÉCTIMUS

Platform

.

A socio-interactive reading platform focused on improving students’ performance in critical reading, through a methodology based on the standards set by PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, which is part of the OECD. The main objective is to provide strategies and tools that enhance the capacity for analysis, reflection, critique, and discussion of expository, argumentative, and narrative texts, through exercises and readings distributed in modules:

Module 1: Introduction to reading, which teaches strategies for reading planning, exposes interests and types of reading, among other reading tools.

Module 2: Comprehensive reading, focused on global, selective, intensive reading, and indicates the importance of main and secondary ideas within a text, among other aspects.

Module 3: Critical reading, focused on critical reading and includes exercises in text analysis, interpretation, and critique.

Module 4: Discussion and debate, focused on the presentation of modes of persuasion, types of arguments, counterarguments, the use of rhetoric, and other elements typical of debate.

The Shelf Platform

.

A platform that offers the best streaming content of movies, documentaries, short films, over 500 works of opera and theater, more than 40 million songs for online and offline listening of all music genres, along with top series and educational games, all available in Spanish from anywhere and on any device. Additionally, it broadcasts cineclub sessions or live events for the entire University Community. All of the above can be enjoyed through “tickets” that allow for a true virtual cinema experience.

Access The Shelf by creating a personal account on the platform, providing your preferred email and password, selecting the country: Colombia, the library: Universidad Industrial de Santander – Bucaramanga, and in the Library card number field: your identification document number.

It is worth noting that the use of this platform will mainly be dedicated to presenting films that represent some of the books that will be used in the semester in the new collection of the Satellite Library, in order to reflect on the two artistic versions of a particular work and express personal views on this activity.

SATELLITE

Library

.

The aim of this project is to create new spaces for the enjoyment of books in other areas of the university campus, thereby deterritorializing the Library. It involves providing new alternatives for accessing, reading in different campus locations, allowing all students from the UIS community to borrow any book that captures their interest.

The satellite libraries mark the emergence of innovative ideas that bring readers closer not just to usage but to the experience of belonging to a library offering various co-creation spaces, group work areas with digital resources, workshops, reading rooms, music rooms, newsletters with updates, and reading recommendations. Furthermore, it serves as a pilot to consider digital lending at other points in the city, gamifying spaces, and creating opportunities for literacy, love, and passion for reading.

Explore our stunning collections, which include booklets containing reviews of the works in the collection, along with QR codes to access the electronic book on the Virtual Library UIS.
